Ideas for Parents helping at home

Here are a couple of websites I have found that could be useful if you want to help your child at home with their maths.
www.coolmath4parents.com
www.nzmaths.co.nz/activities-support-your-child

The second site is the New Zealand Maths site and is relevant to our NZ Curriculum.  I have looked at both sites and they are both very useful and full of information.

Reading is the other area you can really help at home.  Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes every night.  Most children like reading at night in bed.  Parents also need to be good role models - if children see you reading, they are more likely to pick up a book themselves and read.  A lot of children think if they see a movie then they don't need to read the book - that is not the case - most movies have large chunks of the book left out. Here is a link to Kiwi Families (which is a fab website full of all sorts of information) that discusses the importance of reading AND if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can click on your child's age and a list of suitable modern books comes up - have a look!
